Strategic reshoring: Engineering the "made in Europe" advantage

At a glance: The project scope

  • Industry: Public infrastructure & outdoor lighting
  • Component complexity: Complete system integration (castings, finishing, electronics sourcing, and assembly).
  • The core challenge: Rapidly transitioning a street lighting product from Asian manufacturing to European production to win strict public sector tenders.
  • The Rubitech solution: * Collaborative engineering of the new 'Intercity' fixture.
    • Precision casting using highly fluid, corrosion-resistant LM6 (Al-Si12) aluminium alloy.
    • Complete vertical integration: from powder coating to PCB sourcing and final assembly within our European facilities.

The shift to localized public infrastructure

The landscape of European public infrastructure is shifting fast. A prominent specialist in the lighting sector saw the writing on the wall: while their streetlights were excellent, relying entirely on Asian manufacturing was becoming a commercial liability. Municipalities and urban planners were increasingly demanding localized manufacturing, shorter supply chains, and transparent sustainability practices in their public tenders.

The client needed to adapt, and quickly. The goal was to develop the "Intercity" fixture—a high-performance street lamp that could proudly marketed as "Made in Europe". But it had to remain technically superior and commercially viable.

Collaborative engineering and material science

Rubitech stepped in not merely as a foundry, but as a co-development partner. Working intimately with the client’s engineers, we finalized the design of the new fixture to ensure it met the rigorous demands of harsh urban environments.

For a streetlight, fighting off the elements is priority number one. We selected a corrosion resistant aluminum alloy for the casted components. This alloy is highly regarded for its exceptional fluidity, which allowed us to cast the incredibly complex, thin-walled geometries required to keep modern LED optics cool. Just as importantly, it boasts phenomenal natural resistance to atmospheric corrosion.

More than just metal

To successfully reshore a product of this complexity, simply casting the metal in Europe was not enough. Rubitech managed a completely vertically integrated process to deliver a finished, ready-to-install product:

  1. Precision Casting & Finishing: The LM6 parts are cast and then durably powder-coated to withstand extreme UV exposure and temperature fluctuations.
  2. Electronics Sourcing: Leveraging our deep expertise in advanced LED technology, we sourced and managed the integration of the critical electronic components, including the PCBAs.
  3. Final Assembly & Logistics: In our European facilities, we perform the full, meticulous assembly of the lamp, transforming raw castings and electronic components into a tested, market-ready product, followed by turnkey logistics to the end-user.

The transition from an Asian-sourced product to a Rubitech-engineered European product fundamentally transformed the client’s market potential. The "Made in Europe" credential allowed them to win strict municipal tenders that had previously excluded them, opening doors to vast new geographic markets within the EU
